Julia Carnevale 18th International Symposium on Dendritic Cells 2026

Julia Carnevale

Julia Carnevale, MD, is an Associate Professor at UCSF in the UCSF-Gladstone Institute of Genomic Immunology, where she serves as Translational Leader for Oncology, and she co-directs the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at UCSF. She received her MD from Harvard Medical School and completed her internal medicine residency, hematology/oncology fellowship, and postdoctoral training at UCSF, sub-specializing in GI oncology. Her foundational work established genome-wide CRISPR screening in primary human T cells (Shifrut and Carnevale et al., Cell, 2018) and used it to identify targets that enhance immune cell therapies (Carnevale and Shifrut et al., Nature, 2022). The Carnevale lab develops technologies to engineer and screen both adaptive and innate immune cells. Her group recently established genome-wide in vivo CRISPR screening in human T cells in tumor-bearing mice, enabling target discovery under the suppressive conditions encountered within a tumor (Liu et al., Nature, in press). In parallel, they developed a virus-like particle toolkit that makes primary human myeloid cells, including dendritic cells, tractable for engineering and pooled CRISPR screening (Jung and Devant et al., Nature Biotechnology, in press). She is also involved in clinical trials of cell therapies for solid tumors and refractory hematological cancers.
