Shin-ichiro SF Fujii
Shin-ichiro Fujii, MD, PhD, is Team Director of the Laboratory for Immunotherapy at the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences and a Specially Appointed Professor at Kumamoto University Hospital. He began his career as a hematologist, caring for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, an experience that led him to pursue research in immunology. His early research focused on phagocytosis, antigen presentation, and CTL induction by human dendritic cells. He subsequently trained in tumor immunology with Prof. Michael T. Lotze at the University of Pittsburgh and in dendritic cell biology with Prof. Ralph M. Steinman at The Rockefeller University. His work integrates basic cancer immunology with translational and reverse-translational research, focusing on how dendritic cells bridge innate and adaptive immunity. He developed the artificial adjuvant vector cell (aAVC) platform, which targets dendritic cells in vivo and initiates a coordinated immune cascade involving NKT cell activation, NK cell and antigen-specific T cell responses, and the establishment of immunological memory. The platform is currently being advanced for cancer immunotherapy and vaccines against infectious diseases.
